Rohingya Plight

 Rohingya Plight

Context
Rohingya’s are considered to be one of the most persecuted ethnic communities of the world. Estimated to be around 1.1 to 1.3 million, is resident of the state of Rakhine (also known as Arakan) from pre-colonial era. Mostly descendants of former Arab merchants and people from repatriation of Burmese independence and Bangladesh liberation war. The situation of these people was always at the mercy of the majority Burmese speaking Buddhist majorities. The current situation, however, took a drastic turn back on 10 June 2012 when a Rakhine woman was gang-raped and in return ten Rohingya Muslims were burnt.

Rohingyas Identity
Even before Myanmar's independence, Rohingyas were considered as intruders and with independence, the narrative took constitutional form. Although back in 1990 they were issued a certificate(white paper) which gave the right to vote, were recalled in 2015.  Which led the Bengali dialect speaking ethnic people completely 'stateless', despite being rooted in the land since the 15th century.

Current Crisis
Current crisis fulled years back when first ethnic clashes broke out in northern Rakhine between Rohingya Sunni Muslims and Rakhine Buddhists. Ever since the new government took over the country from the military regime, hopes were at high. But the current crisis speaks of a different story. Myanmar's de facto ruler Aung San Suu Kyi, also a Nobel laureate who fought the military regime, however, took no stand against the west narrated "textbook ethnic cleansing". According to UNHCR, a top global human rights watchdog since 2015 around 300,000 people have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh via Naf River.

Refugee Condition
Ever since the crisis started more than 1000 Rohingyans have died in the conflict. Especially after the 2016 exploitation of the Myanmar Army, the exodus started. It is estimated India herself hosts around 40,000 Rohingyans and the situation in neighbouring Bangladesh is even worst. The vast majority of the latest arrivals are located in the densely-populated Kutupalong-Balukhali complex, known as the "Mega Camp" and home to more than 600,000 people. Bangladeshi authorities have recently announced plans to relocate 100,000 Rohingya living in border camps to Bhasan Char, an uninhabited river island that emerged from the silt around 20 years ago in the Bay of Bengal. Other ASEAN countries like Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia who were first reluctant to accept them, have now agreed to provide humanitarian support.

India and International Response
The international community has always proactively supported Rohingya plight and vouched for their cause. The USA itself has put a number of sanction on Myanmar. UN has appointed former general secretary Kofi Annan to find out an amicable solution. Who asked for immediate education, health and security for everyone in Rakhine state.
India despite being South Asia's most influential country has maintained a status quo and only restricted itself to humanitarian assistance. One of the reasons behind it is believed to be India's Act East Policy, in which Myanmar is fitted to be a valuable partner. The strategic importance of it and the growing influence of China in the Indian Ocean have put India into an uneasy situation, where its long-cherished 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' is on the question. But India has maintained to term them as 'Illegal migrants' and subjected it to be deported as per law of land. The growing influence of Arakan Salvation Army also made India derive its position. As the previous adventure with Tamil Tigers made India pay her Prime Minister.

Conclusion
Buddhism is considered to be a peaceful religion which preaches of harmony and prosperity but here is a special case of hatred, which even the 14th Dalai Lama, the iconic figure of Buddhism, has termed "very sad" and further added, "I think such circumstances Buddha would definitely help to those poor Muslims". The crisis of Rohingya has to be considered in humanitarian perspective rather on religious or ethnic one. Every human life is precious and whomever they pray is one.
