Solution of Economic Problems in Different Types of Economy
In the capitalist economy such problems are solved by price mechanism. In the capitalist economy price acts as the indicator of the director of profitable investment. Those commodities whose demand prices are high and are profitable to produce will be produced. For this purpose, only those techniques or factors of production will be employed, which cost less as indicated by the prices of factors. Moreover, the commodities will be produced for those sections of the people who have good incomes are in a position to pay their prices. Therefore, in a free capitalist economy, it is the price mechanism. Which solves the central problems of the economy. Price-mechanism establishes an equilibrium price-both in the commodity marker and in the factor marker. Equilibrium prices in the commodity market and in the factor market are determined through the forces of demand and supply in the various markets.
But in a socialist economy these problems are solved in another way. In this system, people cannot produce or consume any commodity that they require. Neither do they accept any employment that they like. The implication of this price system cannot function in a socialist economy because the price system essentially means the determination of the market price through the equilibrium of demand and supply. Demand does not retain importance, if the consumer is not free to consume the commodity that he requires to. Similarly, if producers can not produce a commodity of their choice, supply does not carry much meaning. Hence, prices cannot be determined through the market mechanism.
The Right to property is also absent in a socialist economy with the exception of the articles of daily consumption. Personal properties are rarely seen in the socialist pattern.
The price system is inapplicable in a socialist economy. How then, does a socialist system solve the three main problems? The answer, briefly, is; through economic planning.
Finally, it should be better to mention that in a mixed economy economic problems can be addressed by both the price system and economic planning.
